Lighting guide

Light the home you've been picturing

Lighting is what makes a style feel real. Find the look you love, see what brings it to life, then come in and we'll help you make it yours.

Modern

Clean architecture, with the light integrated into it.

Modern interiors depend on restraint. Recessed downlights keep the ceiling uncluttered, concealed LED strip defines joinery and benchtops, and a single sculptural pendant provides the focal point. The fittings recede so the room reads as calm, considered and complete.

The lights that make it

  • Slim, trimless LED downlights
  • Linear pendants over the bench or dining table
  • Concealed LED strip under cabinets and shelves
Finishes
Matt black, white, brushed nickel
Colour of light
3000K in living areas, 4000K where you prepare food

French Provincial

Refined, romantic and quietly grand.

French Provincial interiors pair panelled walls and soft white palettes with fittings of genuine craftsmanship. A crystal or candle-style chandelier anchors the room, matching sconces frame the fireplace or mirror, and a warm, dimmable light brings out the detail in every surface.

The lights that make it

  • Crystal or candle-style chandeliers
  • Matching wall sconces beside the mirror or fireplace
  • Lanterns in the entry and hallway
Finishes
Antique brass, aged gold, soft French white, crystal
Colour of light
2700K, always on a dimmer

Scandinavian

Natural materials, simple forms and soft, even light.

Scandinavian design favours warmth and function in equal measure. A dome pendant hung low over the dining table creates an intimate pool of light, opal glass diffuses it gently across pale timber, and floor and table lamps add comfort at eye level.

The lights that make it

  • Low-hung dome pendants over the table
  • Opal glass globes and oysters
  • Arc floor lamps and adjustable wall lights
Finishes
Matt white, matt black, ash and beech timber, opal glass
Colour of light
2700K to 3000K, soft and even

Industrial

Raw materials, softened by warm light.

Industrial interiors take their cues from converted warehouses: exposed brick, steel and timber beams. Metal dome pendants hung in a row give structure, caged wall lights add character, and amber filament globes bring the warmth that keeps hard materials from feeling cold.

The lights that make it

  • Metal dome pendants hung in a row
  • Caged wall lights and bulkheads
  • Exposed filament globes
Finishes
Black steel, raw copper, aged brass, smoked glass
Colour of light
2200K to 2700K for that amber glow

Hamptons

Crisp, tailored and made for entertaining.

The Hamptons look is bright, balanced and polished. Glass lantern pendants are hung in pairs or threes over the island, a linear or tiered chandelier defines the dining space, and linen-shade wall lights add softness. The result suits relaxed Australian living as well as formal entertaining.

The lights that make it

  • Glass lantern pendants in pairs or threes
  • Linear or tiered chandeliers
  • Linen-shade wall lights either side of a mirror
Finishes
Polished nickel, chrome, seeded glass, white linen
Colour of light
3000K, bright but never cold

Mid-century modern

Warm timber, bold colour and sculptural form.

Mid-century modern interiors combine rich colour, walnut and leather with fittings that double as design pieces. A Sputnik or multi-globe pendant becomes the centrepiece, brass and opal glass add a period-correct glow, and sculptural floor lamps complete the composition.

The lights that make it

  • Sputnik-style and multi-globe pendants
  • Brass arms with opal glass
  • Sculptural floor and table lamps
Finishes
Brass, walnut, opal glass, painted metal
Colour of light
2700K, warm like the timber

Coastal

Natural textures and an easy, relaxed feel.

Coastal interiors are light, open and connected to the outdoors. Rattan and woven pendants cast soft, patterned light over benches and dining tables, natural timber and bamboo add texture, and weatherproof wall lights carry the look out to the deck.

The lights that make it

  • Rattan and woven dome pendants
  • Bamboo or timber chandeliers
  • Weatherproof wall lights for the deck
Finishes
Rattan, bamboo, whitewashed timber, frosted glass
Colour of light
2700K to 3000K, like late afternoon

Can't pick just one?

Most homes don't fit neatly into one style. Bring in a photo of your room, a page from a magazine or your building plans, and we'll help you work out what suits it.

Four things worth knowing

Lumens, not watts

Lumens measure how much light you get. Watts measure the power used. With LED, two lights of the same wattage can differ in brightness.

Colour temperature

Measured in kelvin. About 3000K is warm white, 4000K is natural white and 5000K or more is daylight. Lower numbers feel cosier, and higher numbers feel crisper.

Layers of light

Most rooms feel better with more than one source: general light overhead, task light where you work, and a pendant or lamp for atmosphere.

Dimming

A dimmer makes one room work for many moods. Make sure the light and the dimmer are compatible, or you may get flicker.
