Pendant lights
Pendants bring light down to where you use it, and they give a room some shape at eye level. They work alone or in groups, so spacing matters as much as the fitting.
What to look for
Over a kitchen island
Hang about 75–90 cm above the bench, and leave enough space between pendants that they do not crowd each other.
How many
Two or three is typical for an island. Long benches may suit a linear pendant instead.
Open or closed shade
Open shades throw light across the room. Solid shades keep it focused on the surface below.
Cord length
Check your ceiling height and whether the cord can be adjusted, particularly in raked or high ceilings.
