Chandeliers

A chandelier sets the character of a room before anything else does. The right one is mostly about proportion: how wide, how low, and how much light you actually want from it.

What to look for

Sizing it to the room

A useful starting point: add the room’s length and width in metres, and allow about 8 cm of chandelier diameter for each metre.

Over a dining table

Aim for roughly half to two-thirds of the table’s width, hanging about 75–90 cm above the tabletop.

Headroom

Where people walk underneath, keep the lowest point at about 2.1 m or higher from the floor.

Ceiling support

Heavier pieces need solid fixing. Know the weight before your electrician arrives.

This is general guidance. Fixed wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.
